Mark Wilkens of Plato, MN won First Place Spear at the Gathering 2004. He also does a fine Ice Saw.
Marks main interest is in making high-quality hand-crafted ice fishing spears. What got Mark started in spear making: read it in his own words. ” I was looking for a good quality spear and they were hard to find so I set out to make one that would rival the quality of the Old Spear Mastrs of the Past. I was always impressed with the Heinie Lewis Spears from the Cologne,MN area. I thank Roger Schmidt,(an avid spear fisherman),for all of the great pointers and advice that he gave me while trying to get the results I was looking for.”
Makr also carves a few fish decoys for my own use.
Mark is a member of the National Fish Decoy Assn NFDA,
(MDAA) Minnesota Darkhouse and Angling Assn., The Lester Praireie Sportsmans Club, The Shady Lane Sportsmans Club.
Mark won first place with a 9 tine spear at the NFDA- John Jensen Nationals in 2004. He also sold an Ice Saw to NBC to be used on an episode of their TV-series “Crossing Jorndan:
Mark’s dad “Harlan Wilkens” and one of his good friends “Roger Schmidt” make Ice Saws and Tongs under the name of “S&W Ice Saws” – the “Good Old Boys” from Plato, Minnesota.
