John Sterle was born in Chisholm, Minnesota in 1921 and died in 1984. Hew worked for the Oliver Mine as a maintenance person for 42 years before retiring. His wife’s name was Jenny and he married here in 1949.
It is reported that he carved 50 to 75 decoys for locals. He would tank test his fish decoys and it is told that they swam good. He always used thumb tacks fro eyes in his decoys.
John also made a few spears at the Oliver Mine in the 50s. He did this until they banned making spears on the job.
